History: Max was a found dog who found us in the Spring of 1992. He was always an active dog and enjoyed our walks to the beach. As he got older he suffered from atrophied left rear leg muscles due to DJD (degenerative joint disease or arthritis). His range of motion was severely limited and weight bearing was extremely painful. He was always a very active dog who loved to run on the beach and hunt crabs. For a year his condition progressively deteriorated. His gait was "gimpy" and he refused to put weight on his left rear leg. Getting up was very difficult for him, he needed assistance. He started to just lay about since it hurt to do anything. When he was able to rise from his bed unassisted he would "walk" around on three legs, holding his bad leg up. We didn't know what to do. Our vet talked about disarticulating his leg as an option.  For us, it was not an option. Then we found Sheila Wells and Wellsprings.

Therapy: Following an initial session with Sheila, Max began regular swim sessions once a week.  Even after two sessions, we noticed a marked improvement.  He was able to stand on his own without pain, he began putting weight on his leg, and his energy level increased.  He has gained muscle mass back and is using his leg again. He is running, jumping, and climbing hills now - pain-free!  Max, our 11-year old Gordon is giving our 2-year old Flat-coated Retriever a run for his money!! Max continues on weekly sessions because he enjoys the "new life" he has gained from his swim therapy....besides, we make him!  Now Max enjoys running and playing with his "brother and sisters."

Max passed away at the age of 15 in 2004.
